There was a great episode of the West Wing where the President runs a string of Biblical injunctions past a Conservative who uses the Bible to defend her hate. President Bartlet did a great job of showing that claiming something comes from the Bible is in itself no reason to believe it is true, or right, and that people who use the Bible to justify their (im)morality are only picking out the bits they like. One of his examples was to ask for a fair price for his daughter, the Georgetown student who always cleared her plate.
